Pregnancy, childbirth and the post-natal period

Pregnancy and childbirth are natural processes, but are not without associated problems. Chinese medicine is often able to help.  It has its own protocols to care for both mother and baby during pregnancy.  Acupuncture gets excellent results for morning sickness, even where there is constant, countless episodes of vomiting (see below) and Chinese medicine can be used in cases of threatened and recurrent miscarriage and for the numerous common problems which can arise during pregnancy. Closer to the due date, acupuncture is used to prepare the perineum and enhance cervical ripening.

Morning sickness is a debilitating condition which can be severe and persistent. Where there is frequent vomiting, it is referred to as hyperemesis gravidarum, which means excessive vomiting in pregnancy. The loss of nutrients can have a serious impact on health, with the potential for multiple organ dysfunction. Acupuncture is highly effective, and bypasses the need to take oral medication, which are not always effective, and which do not always stay down!

Anxiety, sleep disorders, urinary tract infections and common colds are all more common in pregnancy, and Chinese medicine offers various options and is generally able to to help alleviate these problems.  Some other common problems are gestational diabetes, constipation and haemorrhoids.
